DC FanDome 2021 Review!

Updated: Feb 10, 2022

DC FanDome

The Pandemic has really screwed us up. But it did give way to another way of enjoying convention type news:

Livestreaming!

While DC Fandome had all of the cheesiness you’d expect out of people hosting for nerdy superhero fans, it definitely brought us quite a few trailers. Some we knew, some we might not have been expecting, but all of them were worth watching. So, here I am to do a quick lightning round style reviews on some of the big things announced at DC Fandome!

Brace yourself; this one is a pretty long one!

Black Adam: first look- Dwane Johnson is to Black Adam what Ryan Renolds is to Deadpool. He’s been working so closely with this project that he’s been intertwined with the character indefinitely. It would take major reworking and thinking to separate him from it now. But also, I hope they never do; Cheese on a stick, Black Adam looks fucking terrifying! I am so looking forward to this!

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League- I feel like DC is really getting a handle on something they know they do right. That being both video games and villains. So, this combo is one that can only be mediocre at its worst. I’m also a big fan of anything that flips the script. If you’re telling me the protagonist isn’t the good guy in the story, you’ve peaked my interest. Although, it doesn’t look like the Justice League are necessarily good guys either. Might have something to do with the weird alien creatures but we’ll just have to wait and see.

Peacemaker- There’s something very Deadpool about the Peacemaker teaser and I’m pretty sure that’s just on purpose. A ragtag group of people going on to save the world? Where the main character is really the only one who seems to know what he’s doing? Yeah, we’ve all seen it before, but does it really get old? Maybe… on occasion. When it’s not done right. Also, just a side note, love James Gunn but I wasn’t the hugest fan of Suicide Squad. I mean, it was a movie, but that’s all I can say about it. So, I’m not really looking for any kind of spectacular thing here. (In Layman’s terms? The bar is very low)

Stargirl Teaser- Seems like she’s stuck in a nightmare world..... yeah... its Stargirl.

League of Superpets- This looks extremely adorable. I mean, who doesn’t want to see a bunch of crime fighting pets? Especially when they’re voiced by Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart. It gives off a lot of Secret Life of Pets vibe, maybe with a little Bolt in there for good measure. Either way, I expect this to be pretty cute. Krypto and Ace having the dynamic of Bugs and Daffy is going to make for something fun.

The Flash- After seeing the Snyder cut of the Justice League, I was pumped to see this version of the Flash in his own movie. So, here we are, only a couple years later, with a Flash movie. And seeing this teaser is definitely giving off Flashpoint vibes, which I’ve kind of been hoping for rather than the same, mundane, superhero origin movie. With his intro in Justice League, I feel it’s safe to say we don’t need too much of an origin movie for Barry Allen. From what I can tell from the trailer, it does a pretty good job at showing what we need to know.

Gotham Knights- This game looks pretty good. It’s interesting to have a Batman game that doesn’t center around Batman fighting people. I’ve always liked Nightwing; he gives off so many big brother vibes. I’m under the impression the game switches between characters and you get to find out what each of them is doing at any given time. How will the Batfamily be able to function without Baddad and Gordon around to guide them? I guess we’ll find out!

BatWoman- I love buddy-cop stories. It’s one of my favorite dynamics. And throwing in the whole “bad guy now having to help the good guy” trope makes it that much better. Because you know Batwoman is eventually going to be betrayed in some way, but you don’t really know if Alice is going to turn sides. You know, for real rather than because she has to. That is where a lot of this will show its true potential

.

Catwoman: Hunted- Hey, does anyone here remember Lupin? Old anime? Following a thief? Why am I asking? I don’t know; it just popped into my head for some reason. Anyway, Catwoman teaming up with good guys to get her record erased. All the while, teaming up with Batwoman. I love how much Batwoman we’re seeing, let me say that. And I love the hint of banter we get in this trailer, because that’s Catwoman’s true superpower.

Young Justice- So, it seems to me that Young Justice is going to be the next Teen Titans which is a… very tall order. It looks like it’ll be good and I hope that it’ll be able to stand on its own without that comparison I just made. I hope to see it having a loyal fanbase even after the series ends. Let’s just hope it doesn’t end up with a Young Justice Go!

Shazam: Fury of the Gods- Just like everyone else in the world, I absolutely loved the first Shazam! It was everything DC needed to help get them out of the movie rut. So, to see it getting a sequel is obviously fantastic news. Zachary Levi is amazing and what he brings to the character is absolute perfection. So, here’s hoping he’s going to be Shazam for the long run!

The Batman- Possibly the one thing everyone was waiting for, so of course they save it for last. Honestly, this looks to be the darkest and the grittiest Batman has ever been on screen and we all know he’s been pretty dark before. It makes sense. This is a younger, possibly angrier Batman than we’re used to. He hasn’t quite come into his own yet. I imagine he won’t be as cool and collected as his older counterpart, but that remains to be seen. I’m also not sure if this will in fact be based on the Long Halloween, but I’m hoping it is!

And with that, we end this review. It was quite a bit to dig through, but I think I got quite a bit of the big players for the upcoming months and years. Some of which are already released! Anyway, I wish you all a lovely day, my nerdy fiends. I’ll see you all in the next one!
