Venom : Let There Be Carnage Review!

Venom: Let There Be Carnage

So, as many of you may or may not know, the Bossman is a massive Venom fan. I myself am a pretty big Spider-Man fan. So, obviously, there was going to be a watching and a reviewing of the Venom movie.(which means you can expect Spider-Man reviews too!)

The movie is the second Venom movie so it is a good idea to watch the first one if you haven’t seen it already. The dumbed down sum-up everyone should know going in; Venom is an alien blob monster known as a symbiote. He attaches onto people and acts kind of like a leech; feeding off his host then moving onto another. Eddie Brock is a down-on-his-luck reporter who happens across Venom, they bond, defeat the villain, save the day, all that jazz.

But we’re not here to talk about the first movie. No, you watch that on your own because now we’re talking about Carnage. (maybe someday I’ll backtrack and see how the first Venom holds up.)

Gonna say, I didn’t know if any studio would have the guts to bring Carnage on screen. He is truly a villain with no morals and will kill anyone and anything. It can be hard to imagine him in a superhero movie and not a straight up horror movie. Especially in the way things are run today, with a lot of villains having good qualities.

But I think that’s what makes him so right for this. We know it all exists in shades of grey, which means there’s going to still be people who exist in the darkest side of the spectrum. Even when taking into consideration the good an evil person has, some people are just beyond it. And Carnage is beyond redemption; there is no coming back from it. Ever. And the “tragic villain backstory” as brought on by Cletus Cassidy is less as a way for you to connect with him and more of an understanding to why he’s so fucked up.

It’s to explain, not to excuse. I mean, you can’t really excuse a serial killer no matter the intentions.

There is another character I would like to talk about here too because she was badass. Cletus had a love interest by the name of Frances Barrison. She was his long-time girlfriend/wife and easily just as insane as him. But she also came out the gate with a scream that can blow out a man’s eardrum and topple cars. Which is not a winning combo when it comes to the symbiotes being extremely sensitive to sound.

But that’s not the only reason she’s badass. No, it’s because she shows absolutely no fear when Carnage threatens her and that deserves to be respected. This ten foot monster is threatening to eat you and your response is “who the fuck do you think you’re talking to?” I might’ve been more afraid of her than of him.

Then again, I don’t know if she makes a hobby out of eating faces sooooo… Carnage is still more terrifying.

The movie as a whole doesn’t really give you too much time to breathe though. There isn’t a down to go with the up which turns it into a lot of chaos just being dumped into the story. It works for these particular characters, but it just barely pulls it off. Venom the character is still funny and almost himbo-ish, which I can always appreciate. And, as always, there’s a prize in this box so don’t be walking out early.

It’s exciting to think about where all this will lead, but that’s as much as I can say. Until next time, fiendish nerds!
